Ahmedabad: Gujarat is exploring opportunities to deepen its economic and cultural engagement with Japan ahead of the 75th anniversary of India-Japan diplomatic relations in 2027.
Mukesh Patel, Honorary Consul of Japan in Ahmedabad, undertook a seven-day visit to Japan earlier this month, meeting government and diplomatic representatives across Tokyo, Shizuoka, Hamamatsu, Hyogo, Kobe, Osaka and Fukuoka.
The visit focused on strengthening existing partnerships, promoting investment opportunities in Gujarat and encouraging further business and people-to-people exchanges.
India and Japan established diplomatic relations in 1952. Their partnership has since expanded across economic cooperation, technology, education, strategic affairs and cultural exchanges.
Meetings with Indian and Japanese Officials in Tokyo
During his visit to Tokyo, Patel met Nagma Malik, India’s Ambassador to Japan; Kyoko Hokugo, Japan’s Deputy Director General of Foreign Affairs; and Hideaki Domichi, a former Japanese Ambassador to India.

Domichi had played a role in bringing Japan on board as a partner in Gujarat’s development initiatives.
The discussions formed part of broader efforts to maintain diplomatic engagement and strengthen ties between Gujarat and Japan.
Gujarat Investment Opportunities Highlighted in Osaka
Patel delivered a keynote address at a Make in India seminar in Osaka, where he highlighted investment opportunities in Gujarat.
The state’s established industrial base and existing relationships with Japanese regions provide a foundation for further economic engagement.
Gujarat has developed formal regional partnerships with Japan, including the Hyogo-Gujarat sister-state partnership and the Shizuoka-Gujarat relationship.
Key areas of engagement include:
- Investment and trade: Promoting Gujarat as a destination for Japanese businesses and investors.
- Regional partnerships: Building on existing ties between Gujarat and Japanese prefectures.
- Business engagement: Encouraging continued interaction between business communities in both regions.
- Cultural exchanges: Expanding opportunities for people-to-people contact and mutual understanding.
Hyogo-Gujarat Partnership Marks a Decade
Patel also highlighted a decade of business and people-to-people exchanges between Gujarat and Japan’s Hyogo Prefecture during the 15th India Mela.
The Hyogo-Gujarat sister-state partnership was established in 2016 in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and then Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. In September 2026, year-long celebrations marking its 10th anniversary were launched, alongside an interaction with a business delegation from Hyogo.
The partnership has provided a framework for exchanges involving businesses and institutions in the two regions.
Patel also recalled goodwill delegations that have contributed to building relationships between Gujarat and Japan over the years.
Ahmedabad-Kobe Ties and Wider Regional Cooperation
The visit also included engagement around the relationship between Ahmedabad and Kobe.
Gujarat’s Japan outreach extends beyond state-level cooperation to city partnerships, cultural initiatives and educational exchanges. The Ahmedabad-Kobe relationship is one such channel for promoting closer links between the two sides.
With the 75th anniversary of India-Japan diplomatic relations approaching in 2027, the latest visit highlights ongoing efforts to build on existing economic, cultural and diplomatic connections between Gujarat and Japan.
