Gandhinagar: In a major push toward sustainable urban growth, the Gujarat government has declared 2025 as the ‘Urban Development Year’ under the motto “Earning Well, Living Well.” The initiative aims to strengthen urban infrastructure, expand green spaces, improve waste management, and enhance the overall quality of life for city residents through scientific and environmentally responsible planning.
Focus on Green Spaces and Urban Environment
As part of the Urban Development Year, the state government has committed to large-scale tree plantation and creation of new green areas. Over 240 hectares of green spaces are being developed across Gujarat, including:
- Urban gardens
- Sponge parks for rainwater harvesting and groundwater recharge
- Urban forests
Several of these projects are at different stages of implementation, reflecting the government’s focus on climate resilience and environmental sustainability.

To reduce carbon emissions and promote clean energy, the state plans to launch over 285 solar energy projects in urban areas.
Additionally, 20 Reuse of Treated Wastewater (RTWW) projects are underway, enabling the reuse of approximately 656 million litres per day, easing pressure on freshwater resources.
Clean Air, Waste Management, and Urban Cleanliness
Clean Air Action Plans are being implemented across all municipal corporations, with detailed plans prepared for Bhavnagar, Jamnagar, Junagadh, and Gandhinagar.
In solid waste management:
- 281.802 lakh metric tonnes of legacy waste out of 304.09 lakh metric tonnes has been scientifically treated
- The state aims for 100% disposal by March 2026
More than 1,823 urban cleanliness and solid waste projects have been undertaken with investments exceeding ₹2,756 crore. Additionally, 1,533 Garbage Vulnerable Points at public locations have been identified for remediation.
Towards Viksit Gujarat and Viksit Bharat
