Bengaluru: Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has achieved a significant milestone in strengthening India’s defence capabilities by delivering the 1,000th Repaired and Overhauled (ROH) AL-31FP aero engine to the Indian Air Force (IAF). The achievement was recorded on June 23, 2026, by HAL’s Koraput Division.
This landmark underscores India’s growing indigenous capability in aircraft engine maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO), further reinforcing defence self-reliance under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
AL-31FP Engine Powers Su-30MKI Fighter Fleet
The AL-31FP engine is the powerhouse of the Sukhoi Su-30MKI, which forms the backbone of the Indian Air Force’s fighter fleet.
With the successful overhaul of 1,000 engines:
- Operational readiness of Su-30MKI fleet is significantly enhanced
- Turnaround time for engine maintenance is reduced
- Dependence on foreign Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) is lowered
This milestone ensures improved combat availability and mission readiness of India’s frontline air superiority fighter jets.

Koraput Division Becomes Key MRO Hub
HAL’s Koraput Division has emerged as a critical centre for aero-engine manufacturing and overhaul. Over the years, it has played a crucial role in maintaining the operational strength of the Indian Air Force.
The division’s expertise in handling complex engine systems has made it one of the most important MRO facilities in India’s defence ecosystem.
₹26,000 Crore Engine Manufacturing Contract Boosts Indigenous Capability
The milestone comes alongside HAL’s ongoing execution of a major defence contract worth approximately ₹26,000 crore, signed in September 2024 with the Ministry of Defence.
Under this contract, HAL will manufacture 240 AL-31FP engines for the Indian Air Force. The project is expected to:
- Increase indigenous content in aero-engine production
- Strengthen India’s aerospace manufacturing ecosystem
- Enhance long-term support for Su-30MKI fleet operations
Strengthening India’s Defence Self-Reliance
The combination of indigenous manufacturing and overhaul capability marks a major step toward reducing external dependency in critical defence systems.
HAL’s achievement contributes directly to:
- Higher fleet availability
- Improved logistical efficiency
- Stronger domestic defence industrial base
Officials noted that such developments are key to achieving long-term strategic autonomy in defence production.
Investment in Technology and Skilled Workforce
HAL stated that the milestone reflects continuous investment in:
- Advanced repair and overhaul technologies
- Skilled technical manpower
- Modern aerospace infrastructure
These capabilities reinforce HAL’s position as India’s leading aerospace and defence manufacturing organization.
Supporting Operational Readiness of IAF
With the Indian Air Force heavily reliant on the Su-30MKI for air dominance missions, the timely overhaul and production of engines plays a crucial role in ensuring sustained operational readiness and national security.
The Koraput Division’s achievement is expected to further enhance India’s air combat strength in the coming years.
