New Delhi: In a significant move to strengthen India’s defence manufacturing capabilities and reduce dependence on imported materials, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) have signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with Yantra India Limited (YIL). The agreements aim to support YIL’s modernization efforts and establish a 10,000-ton Forging Press facility, a vital step toward the indigenous production of aluminium alloys used in the defence and aerospace sectors.
This strategic initiative aligns with the Government of India’s ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ (Self-Reliant India) vision and underscores the collective effort of Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs) to enhance domestic manufacturing capabilities.
Financial and Industrial Commitments
As part of the agreement, HAL has extended an interest-free advance of ₹435 crore to YIL, enabling the modernization and development of the advanced forging facility. Meanwhile, BDL has pledged a sustained workload of up to 3,000 metric tonnes over ten years, ensuring long-term operational stability and capacity utilization of the new plant.
The establishment of the 10,000-ton Forging Press will be a game-changer in the production of large aluminium alloy components, currently imported for critical aerospace and defence applications. Once operational, the facility will significantly reduce lead times, manufacturing costs, and foreign exchange outflow while creating employment and skill development opportunities within the country.

MoUs Reflect Spirit of Collaboration and Self-Reliance
The event also witnessed the exchange of three major MoUs among DPSUs, highlighting a shared commitment to collaboration and technological advancement.
Besides the HAL–YIL and BDL–YIL partnerships, a third MoU was signed for the establishment of a Metal Bank at Mishra Dhatu Nigam Limited (MIDHANI).
Boosting Indigenous Capabilities in Defence Production
These agreements are expected to accelerate India’s journey toward self-reliance in critical defence manufacturing. The new forging facility will play a pivotal role in supplying high-quality materials for aircraft, missiles, and weapon systems, catering to the needs of various DPSUs and private sector partners.
