New Delhi: The Government of India has appointed 2010-batch IAS officer Hardik Satishchandra Shah (Gujarat cadre) as Private Secretary to the Prime Minister at the Joint Secretary level in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).

The appointment will be on a co-terminus basis, according to official orders. Shah had already been empanelled for Joint Secretary or equivalent posts in the Government of India on February 5, 2026, paving the way for his elevation.

Key Government Appointment in PMO

As per the order, Hardik Shah will continue serving in a critical support role in the Prime Minister’s Office, strengthening administrative coordination at the highest level of government.

He has been associated with the PMO for several years and is considered part of the core administrative team working closely with the Prime Minister.

Current Role and Tenure

Dr. Hardik Satishchandra Shah has been serving as Private Secretary to the Prime Minister since August 17, 2020, and his tenure is stated to continue till May 31, 2029, subject to government orders and co-terminus arrangements.

Prior to this, he also served as:

  • Deputy Secretary in the PMO (2019–2020)
  • Private Secretary to Union Ministers in the Environment Ministry

Hardik Shah has an exceptional academic record with multiple professional and technical qualifications, including:

  • B.E. in Environmental Engineering from L.D. College of Engineering, Ahmedabad (ranked first)
  • M.E. in Environmental Management (first rank)
  • LL.B. from Gujarat University
  • PhD in Environmental Engineering (Gujarat University/Nirma University)
  • Postgraduate Certificate in Environmental Impact Assessment from the University of Manchester
  • Fellowship at Harvard Kennedy School, Harvard University

Early Career in Engineering and Administration

Before joining the Indian Administrative Service, Shah began his career as a Junior Engineer at the Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB).

He later held several key positions in Gujarat, including:

  • Senior Technical Officer, Department of Forests and Environment
  • Under Secretary, Government of Gujarat
  • Supernumerary Additional Collector, Himatnagar
  • Member Secretary, Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB)

He is credited with modernising GPCB operations and improving transparency through e-governance initiatives.

Central Government Experience

Shah’s central deputation began in 2017 when he was appointed as Private Secretary to Union Environment Ministers, including:

  • Anil Madhav Dave
  • Prakash Javadekar

During this period, he was associated with key environmental policy initiatives, including national programmes on pollution control and plastic waste management.

In 2019, he joined the Prime Minister’s Office as Deputy Secretary, before being appointed as Private Secretary to the Prime Minister in 2020.

Over the years, Hardik Shah has been involved in several significant policy and administrative initiatives, particularly in the field of environment and governance reforms. His work includes:
