Ranchi: In a major step towards strengthening Jharkhand’s agriculture, horticulture, and meat processing sectors, Chief Minister Hemant Soren and Agriculture Minister Shilpi Neha Tirkey signed two important Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) in the presence of senior officials at the Chief Minister’s office in the Jharkhand Assembly. These agreements are expected to pave the way for modernization, skill development, and infrastructure enhancement in the state’s agri-business and livestock industries.
Revival and Modernization of Ranchi Bacon Factory
The first MoU focuses on the revival and modernization of the long-awaited Ranchi Bacon Factory, aiming to transform it into a state-of-the-art meat processing unit. The agreement was signed between the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), National Meat Research Institute (NMRI), Hyderabad, and Jharkhand’s Directorate of Animal Husbandry.
Under this MoU, the following initiatives will be undertaken:
- Modernization of the Bacon Factory using advanced technology and scientific methods
- Infrastructure development to boost the meat processing sector in the state
- Implementation of international quality standards for processed meat
- Training programs for local entrepreneurs and workers
- Exploration of establishing technical training centers for the meat processing industry
Dr. M. Muthukumar, Chief Scientist at ICAR-NMRI, said the collaboration would give Jharkhand’s meat sector a new direction through modern technology and scientific approaches. Animal Husbandry Director Aditya Kumar Anand added that the Bacon Factory revival would benefit farmers, entrepreneurs, and consumers, laying the foundation for the state’s meat industry growth.
MoU for Horticulture and Crop Value Enhancement
The second MoU was signed between the Jharkhand Directorate of Horticulture and the Indian Institute of Horticultural Research (IIHR), Bengaluru. This collaboration aims to enhance productivity, quality, and value addition of fruits, vegetables, ornamental and medicinal plants, and mushrooms across the state.
Key objectives of this agreement include:
- Increasing crop yield and quality
- Promoting value addition in horticultural produce
- Supporting the development of agriculture-based processing industries
- Boosting farmers’ income and strengthening Jharkhand’s rural economy
The state government highlighted that these initiatives are designed to empower farmers, enhance agri-business skills, and promote sustainable economic growth in rural areas.
Impact on Jharkhand’s Agri and Livestock Sectors
Together, these MoUs are expected to:
- Modernize meat processing infrastructure
- Introduce scientific practices and international standards
- Establish skill development and training centers for local workers and entrepreneurs
