New Delhi: Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL), one of India’s leading shipbuilding enterprises under the Ministry of Defence, has been awarded the prestigious Mini Ratna (Category-I) status. The formal certificate was handed over to the Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of HSL, Cmde Girideep Singh, by Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh during the Annual Performance Review meeting of the 16 Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs) held at DPSU Bhavan in New Delhi on Monday.

A Milestone in HSL’s Growth

This recognition marks a significant milestone in the journey of Hindustan Shipyard Limited, highlighting its consistent performance, operational excellence, and significant contributions to India’s defence and maritime sectors. The Mini Ratna (Category-I) status provides HSL with enhanced financial and operational autonomy, enabling the company to expand its capabilities in shipbuilding, repairs, and indigenous defence manufacturing.

During the event, Rajnath Singh declared 2025 as the “Year of Reforms” for the defence sector, emphasizing the government’s commitment to fostering Research & Development, indigenisation, and expanding defence exports. These key pillars align with the government’s vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India). HSL reaffirmed its commitment to supporting India’s maritime and defence manufacturing capabilities, driven by technological innovation, R&D, and the push for self-reliant shipbuilding.

HSL’s Growing Role in Defence Production

The conferment of Mini Ratna status is expected to further enhance HSL’s role in the defence sector by improving its efficiency, competitiveness, and global outreach. With increased autonomy, HSL is poised to take on a more significant role in the Indian defence manufacturing ecosystem, contributing to the nation’s security and maritime interests.
