Mangalore: Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) has achieved a major milestone by commissioning India’s largest underground LPG storage cavern at Mangalore. The facility, constructed beneath on-surface installations, began charging with LPG after receiving statutory approvals in August 2025.

Massive Expansion in Storage Capacity

With the commissioning of this cavern, the Mangalore LPG Import Facility (MLIF) has increased its storage capacity from 25.2 TMT to 105.2 TMT. This fourfold enhancement marks a significant boost to India’s energy security by ensuring uninterrupted LPG supply to millions of households and industries.

Engineering Marvel with Safety at Core

The project has been hailed as a remarkable engineering achievement. It was completed with 4.9 million safe manhours, reflecting HPCL’s unwavering commitment to safety and precision. Executed by the LPG Projects team, the cavern sets new benchmarks in construction excellence and operational resilience.

Strengthening National Energy Infrastructure

The facility positions HPCL as a frontrunner in advancing India’s energy infrastructure. By expanding LPG storage capabilities, it not only secures critical fuel reserves but also contributes to India’s long-term goal of energy self-reliance.
