New Delhi: In a major push for sustainable transportation, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) has signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Volvo Group India to collaborate on clean mobility solutions for heavy-duty trucks. The partnership combines HPCL’s expertise in energy infrastructure and fuels with Volvo Group India’s advanced automotive engineering capabilities, supporting India’s transition to low-carbon transportation.
Focus on LNG, Bio-LNG, and Hydrogen Technologies
Under the MoU, HPCL and Volvo Group India will jointly conduct research and development focused on alternative fuels, including:
- Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG)
- Bio-LNG
- Hydrogen fuel technologies
The collaboration will also cover engine and battery performance evaluation, lubricant validation, and the development of refueling infrastructure tailored specifically for heavy-duty trucking applications. These initiatives are expected to play a key role in reducing emissions from India’s rapidly expanding logistics and freight sector.

Boosting Hydrogen Mobility in India
The partnership aligns with India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission, which aims to position the country as a global hub for green hydrogen production and utilization.
HPCL and Volvo Group India are set to pioneer India’s first 700-bar hydrogen fueling solution for heavy-duty trucks. This high-pressure hydrogen technology is considered critical for enabling long-range hydrogen-powered commercial vehicles, and experts believe it could significantly accelerate the adoption of hydrogen trucks across the country.
Advancing India’s Net-Zero and Clean Energy Goals
The collaboration reflects a broader industry shift toward decarbonizing the transportation sector, which contributes significantly to India’s greenhouse gas emissions.
Key objectives of the partnership include:
- Reducing carbon emissions from heavy-duty transport
- Building scalable hydrogen refueling infrastructure
- Improving efficiency of alternative fuel engines
- Supporting India’s Net-Zero ambitions
The initiative also supports the government’s vision of a “Viksit Bharat” through sustainable industrial growth and energy innovation.
Strategic Significance
Industry analysts note that collaborations between energy companies and vehicle manufacturers are vital for the adoption of cleaner mobility solutions. Developing infrastructure, vehicle technologies, and fuel supply chains simultaneously is essential for large-scale deployment.
With HPCL’s nationwide fuel network and Volvo Group India’s expertise in commercial vehicles, this partnership is expected to become a milestone in India’s low-emission freight transportation journey.
