The union government appointed a Punjab cadre IAS officer, Mr. Amit Kumar as the new Commissioner of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation for a three-year term. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) approved the proposal from the Ministry of Home Affairs for Kumar’s appointment on inter-cadre deputation from Punjab to the AGMUT cadre. His tenure will last for three years or until further orders, whichever transpires earlier.
Mr. Kumar, a 2008-batch Punjab cadre IAS officer, is presently serving as the Director of the Rural Development and Panchayat Department in Punjab.
The position of Chandigarh MC Commissioner had been vacant since the term of the previous Commissioner, Ms. Anindita Mitra (2007-batch IAS officer), ended on August 22. Following her departure, Chandigarh Deputy Commissioner Mr. Vinay Pratap Singh (2011-batch IAS officer) was given additional charge of the role.
Interestingly, almost a month after IAS Mitra was relieved from her duties, the Appointments Committee approved a three-month extension for her tenure on September 22nd. The UT Administration had requested this extension, but when no communication was received, she was relieved on August 22nd.
The UT Administration submitted a panel of three Punjab cadre IAS officers to the Ministry of Home Affairs for the Commissioner position, which included Mr. Amit Kumar, Mr. Rambir (2009-batch IAS officer), and Mr. Girish Dayalan (2011-batch IAS officer).
