Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) in Karnataka is India’s fourth largest Municipal Corporation in India. Recently, the Siddaramaiah-led Karnataka government has also issued an order giving new responsibilities to 6 IAS officers in BBMP.
Now, it is the first time in history that IAS officers are heading the BBMP zones. For the first time, the government has made IAS officers responsible for managing the BBMP’s eight zones. Until now, the zones were headed by joint commissioners, who were KAS (Karnataka Administrative Services) officers.
Deputy CM of Karnataka, Mr. D K Shivakumar, held a meeting with all eight zonal commissioners and urged them to take leadership and ensure smooth coordination between different departments within the BBMP and outside.
According to officials, the government plans to cut down the number of senior IAS officers working in the BBMP head office and focus on strengthening zonal offices that are closer to citizens.
BBMP is the administrative body responsible for civic amenities and some infrastructural assets of the Greater Bengaluru metropolitan area. Its boundaries have expanded more than 10 times over the last six decades.
Recently, 1998 batch IAS officer Munish Moudgil was appointed as the new Special Commissioner (Revenue), BBMP. He is currently serving as Principal Secretary, Government of Karnataka and will be holding his concurrent charge.
While 2012 batch IAS officer Vinoth Priya, who is Executive Director, Suvarna Arogya Suraksha Trust Bengaluru, has been made the Zonal Commissioner (South), Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), along with her current charges.
IAS Karee Gowda, an IAS-officer of 2012 batch, is placed in concurrent charge of the post of Zonal Commissioner (Yelahanka), Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike, Bengaluru. He is serving as Director, Atal Jana Snehi Kendra (AJSK), Bengaluru.
2013 batch IAS officer Snehal R., Director (IT), Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC), Bengaluru is placed in concurrent charge of the post of Zonal Commissioner (East), Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike, Bengaluru.
2016 batch IAS officer Preeti Gehlot, Special Commissioner (Estates) Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike, Bengaluru is placed in concurrent charge of the post of Zonal Commissioner (Dasarahalli), Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike, Bengaluru.
