New Delhi: The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved a two-year extension in the central deputation tenure of Rahul Singh (IAS:1996:BH), who currently serves as the Chairperson of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). His tenure will now continue until November 11, 2027, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

Extension Approved by DoPT Notification
As per an order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, the extension has been granted under the existing provisions of central deputation. The move is aimed at ensuring continuity in leadership at CBSE during an important phase of educational reforms and policy implementation.
From Joint Secretary to CBSE Chairperson
Rahul Singh, an IAS officer of the 1996 batch from the Bihar cadre, commenced his central deputation on November 11, 2020, when he was appointed as Joint Secretary in the DoPT. He served in that role for over three years and was later empanelled for Additional Secretary-level positions in September 2022.
He held the post of Additional Secretary, DoPT, until March 2024, before being appointed as the Chairperson of CBSE on March 13, 2024.
Continuity in Leadership at CBSE
Rahul Singh’s extended term is expected to bring stability to the functioning of CBSE, especially at a time when the board is engaged in overhauling its curriculum and exam structure in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. His administrative experience and past contributions in governance reforms are seen as crucial for the board’s ongoing and upcoming initiatives.
Track Record of Governance and Reform
Singh has been widely regarded for his contributions to administrative efficiency and civil service reforms during his earlier assignments at the DoPT. His expertise in public administration and experience across diverse roles in both the state and central governments have positioned him as a key figure in policy execution and educational governance.
