Abhay Kumar, an Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer of the 2003 batch, has been appointed as India’s next Ambassador to Georgia, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced on Monday.
He is currently serving as the Deputy Director General of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) and will assume his new role shortly.
The MEA made the announcement in a formal statement, highlighting his experience and expertise in international relations.
India established diplomatic relations with Georgia in 1992, shortly after Georgia declared its independence on December 26, 1991. The Indian Embassy in Tbilisi, Georgia’s capital, became operational on July 29, 2024. Prior to this, the Ambassador to Armenia, who resided in Yerevan, was concurrently accredited to Georgia.
Georgia, which set up its Honorary Consulate in Delhi in 2005, later upgraded it to a full-fledged embassy in 2009. The first Resident Georgian Ambassador arrived in New Delhi on February 25, 2010.
Abhay Kumar’s appointment reflects India’s continued strengthening of diplomatic ties with Georgia, marking a new chapter in the bilateral relations between the two nations.
