New Delhi: In a key diplomatic appointment, Pranay Kumar Verma, a senior Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer of the 1994 batch, has been named India’s next Ambassador to Belgium and the European Union. The announcement, made by the Ministry of External Affairs on April 10, 2026, comes at a crucial time as India and the EU move towards strengthening economic and strategic ties.
MEA Announces Key Diplomatic Appointment
According to an official statement, Pranay Verma, who is currently serving as High Commissioner of India to Bangladesh, will shortly assume his new role.
“Pranay Verma (IFS: 1994), presently High Commissioner of India to the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, has been appointed as the next Ambassador of India to the Kingdom of Belgium and the European Union,” the MEA said.
He is expected to take up the assignment soon.
Strategic Timing Amid India-EU Trade Momentum
The appointment gains significance against the backdrop of deepening India-European Union relations. Both sides concluded negotiations for a comprehensive Free Trade Agreement (FTA) on January 27, 2026, which is expected to come into force by early 2027.
The FTA aims to:

- Create a future-ready trade framework for emerging sectors
- Strengthen India’s manufacturing and engineering exports, targeted at USD 300 billion
- Enable access to the USD 2 trillion European market
