New Delhi: In a major administrative reshuffle ahead of crucial political developments and elections, a 1988-batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer Taranjit Singh Sandhu, a former Indian Ambassador to the United States, has been appointed as the new Lieutenant Governor of Delhi.
Sandhu replaces Vinai Kumar Saxena, who has now been appointed Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh following the resignation of Kavinder Gupta.
The reshuffle is part of a broader reorganisation involving governors and lieutenant governors across nine states and Union Territories, signalling significant administrative changes at a time when several regions are preparing for key political events.

With the appointment of Taranjit Singh Sandhu, Delhi gets a new constitutional head after the tenure of Vinai Kumar Saxena. Saxena, who had been serving as Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor, has now been moved to Ladakh to fill the vacancy created after Kavinder Gupta stepped down from the position.
The move is expected to bring a fresh administrative approach to the national capital, as Sandhu brings decades of diplomatic and strategic experience to the role.
Veteran Diplomat Takes Charge
Taranjit Singh Sandhu is a retired Indian Foreign Service officer from the 1988 batch and has had a distinguished diplomatic career spanning more than three decades. Known for his deep expertise in India-US relations, Sandhu served as India’s Ambassador to the United States from February 2020 to January 2024.
During his tenure in Washington, he oversaw several significant developments in bilateral relations, including Narendra Modi’s high-profile visit to the United States in 2023. His tenure also coincided with the global COVID-19 pandemic and a change in the US administration, making it a challenging yet crucial period for diplomatic engagement.
Sandhu formally presented his diplomatic credentials to then US President Donald Trump in early February 2020 and remained in the post until January 31, 2024.
Diplomatic Career Highlights of IFS Taranjit Singh Sandhu
Sandhu began his diplomatic career with postings in the former Soviet region. From 1990 to 1992, he served in Russiaas Third Secretary (Political) and later as Second Secretary (Commercial) at the Indian Mission.

Following the breakup of the Soviet Union, he was posted to Kyiv, Ukraine, where he played a key role in establishing India’s embassy and served as head of the political and administrative wings.
Over the years, Sandhu held several important diplomatic assignments, including:
- First Secretary at the Indian Embassy in Washington, D.C.
- Consul General of India in Frankfurt, Germany.
- Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of India in Washington.
- High Commissioner of India to Sri Lanka from January 2017 to January 2020.
Before his posting in Washington as ambassador, Sandhu had already served in Colombo as head of the political wing, making him one of India’s most experienced diplomats in regional and global affairs.

After retiring from diplomatic service, Sandhu entered electoral politics and contested the 2024 Lok Sabha elections as a candidate of the Bharatiya Janata Party from the Amritsar parliamentary constituency in Punjab.

Born on January 23, 1963, Taranjit Singh Sandhu comes from a family of educationists. He studied at The Lawrence School, Sanawar before pursuing higher education in Delhi.
Sandhu completed his Bachelor’s degree in History from St. Stephen’s College and later earned a Master’s degree in International Relations from Jawaharlal Nehru University.

Sandhu is married to Reenat Sandhu, a former Indian ambassador who served in Italy and the Netherlands. The couple has two children — a son and a daughter.
