New Delhi: A delegation of Indian Foreign Service (IFS) trainees recently visited several Indian Army installations in Arunachal Pradesh to gain first-hand exposure to the operational realities of border security in remote frontier regions. The visit, which included stops at Likabali, Aalo, and forward locations in Mechuka, was aimed at helping future diplomats better understand the strategic and operational environment along India’s borders.
The tour was conducted from March 2 to March 7 and provided the trainees with insights into the role of the Indian Army in safeguarding the nation’s frontiers under challenging geographical and climatic conditions.
Exposure to Frontier Security Environment
According to Defence Public Relations Officer Lt Col Mahendra Rawat, the visit was organised to familiarise the trainee diplomats with the security environment in the sector and the various factors involved in maintaining effective border management.
During their visit, the trainees were taken to key military installations as well as forward areas located in remote and high-altitude terrain.
Officials briefed them about the operational dynamics in the region and the complexities involved in managing security along sensitive frontier zones.
Understanding Operational Challenges
The trainees received detailed briefings on several aspects of military operations in the area, including:
• Operational preparedness
• Logistics management in difficult terrain
• Deployment strategies in remote locations
• Challenges of maintaining infrastructure and supplies in high-altitude areas
These briefings helped the future diplomats gain a deeper understanding of how the Indian Army maintains operational readiness despite demanding environmental conditions.
Interaction with Army Leadership
During the visit, the IFS trainees interacted with senior Army commanders and officers posted in the sector.
The officers explained the strategic importance of the region and highlighted how military preparedness plays a critical role in safeguarding national borders.
They also spoke about the importance of coordination between defence forces and diplomatic institutions in ensuring long-term security and stability.
Trainees Appreciate Soldiers’ Dedication
The trainee diplomats expressed appreciation for the dedication, professionalism, and resilience displayed by soldiers serving in remote frontier areas.
Observing the conditions in which troops operate helped the trainees understand the realities faced by the armed forces in protecting the country’s territorial integrity.
Strengthening Diplomacy-Defence Synergy
Officials said the visit highlighted the importance of synergy between diplomacy and defence in protecting national interests.
For diplomats who will represent India internationally, understanding the strategic realities on the ground is considered crucial in shaping effective foreign policy and maintaining peace and stability along sensitive borders.
The exposure provided during the visit is expected to help the future diplomats appreciate the operational challenges faced by the military and the role of diplomacy in complementing defence efforts.
