New Delhi: India-Indonesia BrahMos Missile Deal has become a major development in Asia’s defence landscape. Indonesia has officially entered into an agreement with India to procure the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile system, strengthening military cooperation between the two countries.
The deal is aimed at improving Indonesia’s maritime defence capabilities and reflects India’s growing role as a global defence exporter. Officials from Indonesia’s defence ministry confirmed the agreement, highlighting that the purchase is part of the country’s broader plan to modernize its military hardware and protect its strategic sea lanes.
Details of India-Indonesia BrahMos Missile Deal
Indonesia’s defence ministry has confirmed that the country has entered into an agreement with India to procure the BrahMos missile system. The announcement was made by defence ministry spokesperson Rico Ricardo Sirait.
The deal is part of Indonesia’s effort to upgrade its military capabilities, particularly in maritime defence and coastal security. Indonesia is an archipelagic nation with thousands of islands and long sea borders, so strengthening naval deterrence is a strategic priority. Although the exact financial value of the agreement has not been publicly confirmed, earlier discussions suggested that the deal could be worth around $200 million to $350 million.
What Is the BrahMos Missile?
The BrahMos missile is one of the world’s fastest operational supersonic cruise missiles. It is jointly developed by India and Russia through BrahMos Aerospace.
Key features of BrahMos include:
- Supersonic speed of around Mach 2.8, making it extremely difficult to intercept
- High precision strike capability against land and sea targets
- Multi-platform launch capability from land, ships, submarines, and aircraft
- Designed with a “fire-and-forget” system, meaning it does not require further guidance after launch
Because of its speed and accuracy, BrahMos is widely regarded as one of the most powerful cruise missile systems in the world.
Indonesia Becomes Second Foreign Buyer
With this agreement, Indonesia becomes the second foreign country to purchase the BrahMos missile system from India.
- The Philippines signed the first export deal in 2022 for coastal defence systems.
- Indonesia now joins the list, marking another milestone for India’s defence exports.
This move reflects growing interest among Southeast Asian nations in India’s advanced defence technology.
India-Indonesia BrahMos Missile Deal: Strategic Importance for Southeast Asia

For Indonesia, the BrahMos missiles will help:
- Protect important sea lanes such as the Malacca and Sunda Straits
- Strengthen coastal defence and naval deterrence
- Modernize its armed forces
For India, the deal supports its policy of expanding defence diplomacy and military exports, while also building stronger strategic ties with ASEAN nations.
