New Delhi: India–Kenya defence cooperation received a major boost as the Indian Navy’s frontline warship INS Trikand visited Mombasa and handed over military equipment to the Kenya Defence Forces. During the visit, India supplied 100 INSAS rifles and 50,000 rounds of ammunition, highlighting growing strategic ties between the two nations. 

The move is part of India’s broader maritime outreach under its MAHASAGAR initiative, aimed at strengthening security partnerships in the Western Indian Ocean region.

INS Trikand, a guided-missile frigate of the Indian Navy, arrived at Mombasa Port on April 7, 2026, for a four-day operational visit.

  • 100 INSAS rifles
  • 50,000 rounds of ammunition
  • 1.5 Tesla MRI machine (medical support)

This support was handed over to the Kenya Defence Forces in the presence of senior officials from both countries.

The initiative is part of a Quick Impact Project (QIP) under India’s MAHASAGAR (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions) vision.

The visit included participation from senior defence officials:

  • Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan (India)
  • Major General Paul Otieno (Kenya Navy Commander)

They held discussions on:

  • Strengthening maritime security
  • Expanding defence cooperation
  • Training and capacity-building programs

These talks reflect the deepening military partnership between India and Kenya.

Joint Naval Exercise Planned

Before departure, INS Trikand and the Kenya Navy are scheduled to conduct a Passage Exercise (PASSEX).
