Colombo: In a significant diplomatic and strategic outreach, India’s Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi, met with Sri Lankan Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya in Colombo on Tuesday. The high-level discussions focused on strengthening bilateral defence ties, enhancing maritime cooperation, and reinforcing the shared commitment to peace and stability in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).
Strategic Talks on Maritime and Defence Cooperation
Admiral Tripathi, who is on a four-day official visit to Sri Lanka, held wide-ranging talks with Prime Minister Amarasuriya on advancing joint naval initiatives, building operational synergy, and promoting collaboration between the armed forces of both nations.
The Indian Naval Chief also met with senior defence leadership, including commanders of the Sri Lankan Navy, Air Force, and Army, to explore opportunities for joint training programs, coordinated operations, and increased participation in Indian-hosted naval events such as:
- Admiral’s Cup
- International Fleet Review
- MILAN (a multilateral naval exercise hosted by India)
These engagements underline India’s growing role as a maritime security partner and its commitment to enhancing regional interoperability with neighbouring countries.
Address at National Defence College Highlights Shared Vision
During his visit, Admiral Tripathi addressed officers at Colombo’s National Defence College, where he emphasized the historical and strategic depth of the India–Sri Lanka partnership. Highlighting successes in anti-piracy patrols and drug interdiction operations, he advocated for continued agility, credible capability, and deeper technological cooperation to tackle emerging maritime challenges.
He underscored the importance of technological transformation and interoperability between the two navies, especially in the context of evolving security dynamics in the Indo-Pacific region.
Participation in Galle Dialogue 2025
Admiral Tripathi is also scheduled to participate in the prestigious Galle Dialogue 2025, a premier international maritime security conference hosted by the Sri Lankan Navy. The dialogue brings together naval chiefs, policymakers, and maritime experts from across the globe to discuss regional cooperation, maritime strategy, and emerging challenges in the Indian Ocean Region.
Strengthening Regional Maritime Security
India’s engagement with Sri Lanka comes at a time when strategic stability in the Indian Ocean is of growing importance. This visit reflects India’s intent to foster trusted partnerships with its neighbours, contribute to maritime domain awareness, and ensure that regional sea lanes remain safe, open, and secure.
