New Delhi: The Indian Air Force forest fire operation in Arunachal Pradesh showcased the force’s rapid response and operational precision as it deployed a Mi-17 V5 helicopter to tackle a major wildfire near Pasighat.
The operation was carried out in the Mebo and Sigar areas of East Siang district, where flames threatened nearby settlements and forest land. Acting swiftly under humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) operations, the Indian Air Force (IAF) conducted multiple aerial sorties and released around 66,000 litres of water to contain the blaze and protect nearby habitations.
The successful mission highlights the increasing role of the IAF in disaster response and emergency management across India’s remote and sensitive regions.

Local authorities and emergency services initially tried to control the blaze, but the rugged terrain and dense vegetation made ground firefighting extremely difficult. To prevent the fire from spreading further, authorities sought aerial assistance from the Indian Air Force.
Arunachal Pradesh Forest Fire: Indian Air Force Responses
Responding quickly to the emergency, the Indian Air Force deployed a Mi-17 V5 helicopter, a versatile transport helicopter widely used for disaster relief and rescue missions.
According to an official post by the Indian Air Force’s Media Coordination Centre, the helicopter conducted multiple sorties over the affected forest area. During these operations, the helicopter released around 66,000 litres of water over the fire zone to suppress the flames.
This aerial firefighting operation helped significantly reduce the intensity of the blaze and prevented it from spreading toward nearby populated areas.
What Makes the Mi-17 V5 Helicopter Effective in Disaster Operations
The Mi-17 V5 helicopter is one of the Indian Air Force’s most reliable platforms for disaster response.
Key capabilities include:
- Ability to operate in difficult terrain and high-altitude areas
- Capacity to carry specialized firefighting buckets for aerial water drops
- High endurance for multiple rapid sorties
- Capability to support search, rescue, and evacuation missions
Because of these capabilities, the helicopter is frequently used in flood relief, forest fire control, and humanitarian missions.
Role of the Indian Air Force in HADR Operations
The operation in Arunachal Pradesh is part of the Indian Air Force’s Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) responsibilities.
The IAF regularly assists civil authorities during emergencies such as:
- Floods
- Forest fires
- Earthquakes
- Landslides
- Medical evacuations
Through rapid deployment of aircraft and helicopters, the force often becomes the first responder in remote or inaccessible areas.
