New Delhi: The Indian Army T-72 Ajeya upgrade plan is gaining attention as India moves to modernise its ageing tank fleet. The Army is planning to upgrade nearly half of its T-72 tanks to extend their service life up to around 2040.

This decision comes as delays continue in the Future Ready Combat Vehicle (FRCV) programme, which is meant to replace these tanks. The upgrade will improve firepower, mobility, and battlefield technology, ensuring the tanks remain effective in modern warfare.

Why Does India Need T 72 Ajeya Tanks Upgrade

The T-72 Ajeya tanks have been the backbone of India’s armoured forces for decades. India operates over 2,000 T 72 tanks, making them one of the largest parts of its tank fleet.

However, these tanks were inducted in the 1980s and are now ageing. At the same time, the FRCV project, which is supposed to replace them, is still under development and facing delays.

Because of this gap, the Army needs a strong interim solution—and upgrading the existing fleet is the most practical option.

Key Highlights of the T 72 Ajeya Tanks Upgrade

The Indian Army is planning multiple advanced upgrades to improve performance and survivability:

1. More Powerful Engine

  • Current engines (780 HP) will be upgraded to 1,000 HP engines
  • This will improve speed, mobility, and performance in tough terrains

2. Advanced Fire Control System

  • Better targeting accuracy
  • Ability to fight effectively during night and low visibility
  • Already, thermal imaging systems have been installed in some tanks

3. Improved Protection

  • Addition of Explosive Reactive Armour (ERA)
  • Better defence against modern anti-tank weapons

4. Modern Electronics and Communication

  • Navigation systems
  • Better radios and battlefield communication
  • Laser warning systems

These upgrades are part of earlier programs like Combat Improved Ajeya, which aimed to modernise older tanks with new technology.

Scale of the T 72 Ajeya Tanks Upgrade Plan

  • Around 1,000 T-72 tanks are expected to receive upgrades
  • This is roughly half of the total fleet
  • Many upgrades will follow a “Buy and Make in India” model, boosting local defence manufacturing

Role of FRCV: The Future Replacement

The Future Ready Combat Vehicle (FRCV) is India’s next-generation tank program.

  • It aims to replace T-72 tanks in phases
  • Around 1,700–1,800 new tanks are planned
  • It will include advanced features like AI systems, drones, and network-centric warfare capability

However, since FRCV will take time, upgraded T-72 tanks will continue to serve as a bridge between old and future systems.

What is the Importance of T 72 Ajeya Tanks Upgrade for India

Upgrading T-72 tanks is important for India’s defence for several reasons:

1. Immediate Combat Readiness

India faces security challenges on both western and northern borders. Upgraded tanks ensure readiness.

2. Cost-Effective Solution

Upgrading existing tanks is cheaper and faster than buying completely new ones.

3. Boost to Make in India

Local production and assembly of engines and systems will support India’s defence industry.

4. Time for FRCV Development

The upgrade gives the Army enough time to properly develop and induct next-generation tanks.
