New Delhi: The Indian Navy’s First Training Squadron (1TS) has advanced its overseas outreach with simultaneous port calls in La Réunion and Mauritius as part of its Long-Range Training Deployment in the Southwest Indian Ocean Region. On 8 September 2025, INS Tir and ICGS Sarathi docked at La Réunion, while INS Shardul arrived at Port Louis.

Strengthening Indo-French Naval Cooperation

At La Réunion, Tir and Sarathi were welcomed by the French Navy’s FS Nivose, followed by a Passage Exercise (PASSEX). The visit features cross-training sessions, diving drills, yoga activities, and sports fixtures aimed at deepening naval bonds. Senior 1TS leadership also held talks with the French Naval Base Commander and the Commandant Supérieur des FAZSOI, focusing on security, future joint exercises, and expanded maritime cooperation under the vision of friendship and trust.

India–Mauritius Maritime Partnership

INS Shardul conducted joint patrols and Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) surveillance with MCGS Victory and a Mauritian Coast Guard Dornier aircraft prior to entering Port Louis. During the visit, the ship’s Commanding Officer engaged senior Mauritian officials, including the Commissioner of Police, National Coast Guard Commandant, and Secretary of Home Affairs. These interactions reinforced the enduring bonds of trust, cooperation, and cultural affinity between the two nations.

Joint Training and Community Engagement

Planned activities in Mauritius include training in diving, firefighting, damage control, and shipboard familiarisation drills with the National Coast Guard. Cultural programs, yoga sessions, and sports fixtures will enhance camaraderie and people-to-people ties. Community outreach, school tours, cross-deck visits, and open-ship events will give the public and Indian diaspora a closer look at naval life and operations.

Commitment to Regional Stability

The concurrent deployment of 1TS units in La Réunion and Mauritius underscores India’s commitment to maritime collaboration with partner nations. These engagements reflect shared aspirations for regional stability, enhanced interoperability, and cooperation aligned with the vision of MAHASAGAR, further reinforcing the Navy’s role as a bridge of friendship across the Indian Ocean Region.
