Indian Masterminds Stories

New Delhi: Indian Railways has approved ₹133.2295 crore for the construction of a four-lane Road Over Bridge (ROB) in place of Level Crossing No. 53 at Km 62/2-4 on the Udhna-Ukai Songadh section of Western Railway.

The project will be implemented on a cost-sharing basis between Indian Railways and the State Government, with both sides contributing nearly ₹66.61 crore towards the project.

The new grade-separated infrastructure is expected to improve road traffic movement, reduce interference between road and railway operations and support safer and more efficient train movement on the section.

Four-Lane ROB to Replace Level Crossing No. 53

The approved project involves the construction of a four-lane ROB at the existing Level Crossing No. 53.

The bridge will provide grade-separated movement for road traffic, eliminating the need for road vehicles to cross the railway tracks at the existing level crossing.

The project is expected to help:

  • Improve the movement of road traffic.
  • Reduce interference with railway operations.
  • Support smoother train operations.
  • Enhance safety at the crossing location.
  • Improve operational efficiency and reliability on the railway section.

Railway Bridge Portion to Use Open Web Girder

The railway portion of the proposed ROB will comprise an Open Web Girder (OWG).

The estimated cost of the railway bridge portion is ₹91.60 crore.

The location has a 62% skew, which adds to the design and construction complexity of the bridge. The skew condition will require appropriate engineering solutions during the construction of the structure.

Viaduct and Railway Approach Details

The project includes separate viaduct and railway approach components.

Viaduct Portion

The proposed viaduct will have a total length of 311.58 metres.

  • Length: 311.58 metres
  • Estimated cost: ₹19.98 crore

Railway Approach Portion

The Railway Approach (RE) portion will have a length of 524.32 metres.

  • Length: 524.32 metres
  • Estimated cost: ₹10.25 crore

Together, these components will form part of the overall four-lane grade-separated road infrastructure.

₹133.23 Crore Project to Be Shared Equally

The total estimated cost of the ROB project is ₹133.2295 crore.

The project will be funded jointly by Indian Railways and the State Government.

  • Indian Railways share: ₹66.6147 crore
  • State Government share: ₹66.6148 crore
  • Total project cost: ₹133.2295 crore

The nearly equal cost-sharing arrangement will support the development of the ROB while replacing the existing level crossing with a grade-separated road connection.

Project to Improve Road and Railway Operations

The construction of the four-lane ROB is expected to facilitate smoother movement of road traffic while reducing interference with railway operations.

By separating road and rail traffic, the project will support smoother train operations on the Udhna-Ukai Songadh section of Western Railway.

The infrastructure is also expected to contribute to safer and more efficient railway movement, with improved operational efficiency and reliability benefiting passengers and other road users.
