Kavach is India’s Indigenous Automatic Train Protection System

Kavach is an indigenously developed Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system designed to enhance operational safety across the railway network.

The system monitors train operations and supports safer train movement by providing automatic intervention when required. Its safety functions include measures aimed at preventing Signal Passing at Danger (SPAD) and automatically applying brakes when necessary.

Key safety functions of Kavach include:

  • Helping prevent Signal Passing at Danger (SPAD)
  • Automatically applying brakes when required
  • Monitoring train operations
  • Supporting safer train movement
  • Strengthening the overall train protection system

Project to Strengthen Safety Infrastructure in Lucknow Division

The approved deployment will extend Kavach protection to the identified balance sections of the Lucknow Division. By expanding the coverage of the automatic train protection system, Indian Railways aims to strengthen safety measures available during train operations.

The project forms part of the broader effort to deploy Kavach across the railway network and upgrade existing train protection systems through indigenous technology.

Focus on Safer and More Reliable Train Operations

The expansion of Kavach 4.0 is expected to strengthen the technological safety framework supporting train movement in the division. The system’s ability to monitor operations and automatically apply brakes when required provides an additional layer of protection during train operations.

The ₹252 crore approval for 607.7 route kilometres reflects the continued focus on expanding modern safety infrastructure across Indian Railways.

Indian Railways’ Push for Indigenous Safety Technology

Indian Railways has been working to expand the deployment of Kavach as part of its efforts to modernise railway safety systems. The indigenous technology is intended to support safer train movement while strengthening the overall reliability of railway operations.

The latest approval for the Lucknow Division will add 607.7 route kilometres of Kavach 4.0 coverage, further expanding the reach of the automatic train protection system on the network.
