Indian Railways has reached a remarkable milestone, electrifying approximately 97% of its Broad Gauge (BG) network, as announced by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. This achievement is part of a mission-mode initiative aimed at making transportation more sustainable and economical.

The electrification of the BG network has seen an unprecedented surge over the past decade. Since 2014-15, Indian Railways has electrified about 45,200 route kilometers, marking a dramatic increase in pace compared to previous years. Electrification efforts rose sharply, from an average of 1.42 kilometers per day during 2004-2014 to an impressive 19.7 kilometers per day in the current financial year, 2023-24.

This transition to electric traction represents a significant step toward environmental sustainability and operational efficiency. Electric traction is not only more environmentally friendly but also about 70% more economical than diesel, reducing operational costs for the Railways. Additionally, the move aligns with India’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and dependence on fossil fuels.

To ensure the reliability of the electrified network, Indian Railways has established robust connections to the national grid through state and central transmission utilities. These systems are equipped with multiple redundancies, including backup power at grid and traction substations, to guarantee uninterrupted train operations. This infrastructure ensures that the electrified network remains resilient and capable of meeting the demands of a rapidly modernizing railway system.

This milestone reinforces Indian Railways’ position as a global leader in green transportation initiatives and brings it closer to its goal of full electrification of the Broad Gauge network. It also underscores the government’s dedication to creating an energy-efficient and sustainable transportation system, paving the way for a greener future in the country.
