An Indore court has moved forward on a complaint filed against IAS officer Mr. Santosh Verma, following allegations that he made objectionable remarks against the Brahmin community. The court has instructed the police to provide a detailed status report by January 20, marking an important procedural step in the matter.
Complaint Filed Over Alleged Derogatory Statements
Advocate Mr. Shailendra Dwivedi filed the complaint in the district court, accusing Mr. Verma, who was recently elected as president of the Madhya Pradesh Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe Officers-Employees Association (AJAKS), of making comments that allegedly targeted daughters of the Brahmin community.
According to the complaint, the remarks were made during an AJAKS event in Bhopal last month. The complainant stated that the words used were “vulgar and low-level,” and had the potential to disturb social harmony and create animosity between communities.
Magistrate Directs Police to Submit Report
After reviewing the plea, the First Class Judicial Magistrate directed the in-charge of Tukoganj police station to file a comprehensive status report by January 20. The complainant has also requested that the court instruct the police to register a case under relevant legal provisions and conduct a formal investigation.
Complainant Approaches Court After FIR Not Registered
Mr. Dwivedi informed the court that he had already submitted a written complaint at Tukoganj police station. However, due to the absence of an FIR, he was compelled to seek legal recourse through the district court.
State Administration Issues Show-Cause Notice
On November 26, the General Administration Department of Madhya Pradesh issued a show-cause notice to Mr. Verma, asking him to explain why disciplinary action should not be pursued. The notice highlighted the seriousness of the allegations and their potential administrative implications.
IAS Officer Offers Clarification and Expresses Regret
Following public debate over the incident, Mr. Verma stated that only a selective portion of his speech had been circulated, which distorted the full context. He added that he had no intention of hurting the sentiments of any community and expressed regret if any misinterpreted segment caused offense.
Issue Echoes in Bihar Assembly
The controversy has now expanded beyond Madhya Pradesh, resonating in the Bihar Assembly on Thursday. LJP (Ram Vilas) MLA Mr. Raju Tiwari raised the matter on the floor of the House, describing the alleged comments as extremely unfortunate.
Mr. Tiwari, identifying himself as a member of the Brahmin community, said the remarks were a serious insult that undermined the dignity associated with the IAS position. He urged the Speaker, the Chief Minister, and the House members to ensure that an FIR is registered against Mr. Verma and that strict action is taken.
The MLA emphasized that such actions were necessary to protect the respect of all communities and to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Details of the Alleged Remark
The controversy stems from an alleged statement made by Mr. Verma during a general assembly of AJAKS. It is claimed that he stated, “till the time a Brahmin girl does not marry my son, reservation will not end in the country.”
This remark, widely circulated and debated, has fueled public anger and triggered political reactions, prompting demands for immediate legal and administrative action.
