Bhopal: Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav commended an innovative initiative by the Indore administration to manufacture indigenous Diwali lamps from cow dung, during his visit to an exhibition at Nehru Park, held as part of National Cleanliness Day celebrations.
The Chief Minister personally inspected the lamp-making machine, interacted with officials, and lauded the city’s efforts to promote Swadeshi products, rural enterprise, and environmental sustainability through local innovation.
Cow Dung Lamps to Boost Swadeshi & Self-Reliance
The project is being executed under the Seva Pakhwada campaign and aims to create a new economic model that aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ and Chief Minister Dr. Yadav’s focus on indigenous, eco-friendly solutions.
As part of the project:
- Two lamp-making machines have been installed at the Municipal Corporation’s cowshed in Hatod.
- More machines will be added in the coming days to scale up production before Diwali.
The initiative will enable the production of lakhs of lamps, which will be packaged and sold in the market.

Collector’s Direct Supervision
Indore Collector Mr. Shivam Verma is personally overseeing the initiative, ensuring inter-departmental coordination and timely execution. Departments involved include:
- Animal Husbandry
- Municipal Corporation
- District Supply Controller
Collector Verma has instructed officials to submit daily progress reports, emphasizing accountability and timely production to meet festive demand.
CM Lauds Innovation & Indigenous Spirit
Speaking at the exhibition, Dr. Yadav praised the initiative as a symbol of self-reliance, cleanliness, and cultural pride, stating:
“Indore is once again setting an example for the nation by turning a simple resource like cow dung into a symbol of prosperity and sustainability. This innovation promotes Swadeshi and offers livelihood opportunities while staying rooted in our traditions.”
A Model for Sustainable Celebrations
The cow dung lamp initiative is not only eco-friendly but also provides:
- Livelihood support for rural communities
- Waste-to-wealth transformation
- Cultural and environmental consciousness during festive seasons
With the growing call for green Diwali and sustainable celebrations, Indore’s model could soon be replicated in other districts.
