Maafilaafushi Atoll, Maldives: In a strong display of regional cooperation and maritime partnership, Indian Naval Ship INS Sharda has arrived at Maafilaafushi Atoll in the Maldives to participate in a Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) exercise scheduled from May 4 to May 10, 2025.

The deployment is part of India’s broader strategic outreach under the MAHASAGAR initiative – Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions – which underscores New Delhi’s commitment to peace, stability, and prosperity in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).

Strengthening Bilateral Maritime Cooperation

The joint HADR exercise aims to boost operational coordination and interoperability between the Indian Navy and the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF). It will include a series of activities such as:

  • Disaster Response Coordination
  • Search and Rescue (SAR) operations
  • Medical Assistance and Casualty Evacuation
  • Logistical and Engineering Support
  • Joint Training Drills
  • Community Engagement and Outreach Programs

By simulating response mechanisms to a large-scale natural disaster, the exercise will test and enhance both countries’ preparedness and capability to jointly respond to real-world emergencies.

A Shared Vision for the Region

This initiative reflects the deepening defence ties between India and the Maldives and is part of New Delhi’s ongoing efforts to be a first responder and net security provider in the Indian Ocean Region. The MAHASAGAR vision places emphasis on collective growth, maritime security, and regional stability through inclusive collaboration.

Indian Navy officials highlighted that such engagements are essential not only for operational readiness but also for building trust and resilience in the region. The Maldivian side has also expressed appreciation for India’s continued support in capacity-building and humanitarian response.

Looking Ahead

As climate-related disasters become increasingly frequent in the Indian Ocean, exercises like these hold growing importance. They ensure that regional partners are well-prepared to respond to natural calamities swiftly and effectively, minimizing loss of life and property.

India and the Maldives, through this joint initiative, reaffirm their commitment to a secure, resilient, and cooperative maritime neighbourhood.
