IIT-Madras Appoints Retired IPS G Thilkavathi as Student Ombuds

Thilakavathi will oversee and address student grievances, safety, and disciplinary issues in her role as student ombudsman.

The board of governors of the Indian Institute of Technology-Madras (IIT Madras) has chosen former DGP G Thilakavathi as student ombudsman, effective November 7.

“The appointment marks the institute’s commitment in maintaining a safe campus environment while ensuring the wellbeing of the students are protected,” the institute said in a press release.

Thilakavathi will oversee and address student grievances, safety, and disciplinary issues in her role as student ombudsman.

She will be critical in establishing and cultivating an inclusive climate on campus, ensuring that students have a supportive environment for their academic and personal development.

“IIT-Madras has always prioritized our students’ welfare and safety, and Thilakavathi’s appointment as student ombuds underscores our commitment to enhancing our students’ overall experience while providing them with a trusted authority to turn to in times of need,” said IIT-Madras director V Kamakoti.

“She will collaborate closely with the institute to ensure that students’ concerns are heard and addressed in a timely and equitable manner.” We are committed to maintaining a secure and supportive campus climate that allows students to flourish in both academic and personal endeavors.”

The institute management will work closely with the student ombuds to handle issues in a timely way.
