A retired IPS officer fell prey to deepfake technology when he became a victim to a financial fraud. Mr. Arvind Sharma from Ghaziabad got duped by cyber criminals of Rs. 74,000 through a manipulated video.
The deepfake video portrayed Mr. Sharma’s daughter in purported conversation with retired ADGP Prem Prakash. He received two such fake videos from the scammers on 4 November, one containing explicit content and the other featuring a man in a police uniform who threatened him with imprisonment if he did not pay up.
In panic, Mr. Sharma transferred Rs. 74,000, only to realise later that he has been a victim of cyber fraud. He then filed a police complaint and currently the Kavinagar police is investigating the case.
