Meet IPS Officer G Vijay Krishna Yadav, Reinstated by Maharashtra Government After 7 Years Despite Bribery Allegations

The Maharashtra government had recommended Yadav's dismissal in 2019. However, IPS officers, being central government employees, cannot be dismissed without the approval of the Central Government.

Mumbai: In a surprising move, the Maharashtra government has reinstated IPS officer G Vijay Krishna Yadav after a seven-year suspension. Yadav, who was suspended in 2018 due to his involvement in a bribery case, has now been posted as Deputy Superintendent of Human Rights in Amravati district, though this position is widely considered a relatively low-profile assignment.

Suspension Due to Bribery Allegations in 2018

G Vijay Krishna Yadav, a 2015 batch IPS officer, was accused of demanding a bribe from a supplier in Amravati in exchange for dropping theft charges and releasing a supplier’s truck. The officer allegedly asked for a bribe of ₹3 lakh, with his aide, Sunny Singh Bugai, being caught red-handed while accepting ₹1 lakh on his behalf in January 2018.

The incident occurred when Yadav was posted as the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) in Amravati, and he reportedly continued to demand the bribe even after being transferred to the position of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) in Nanded. After an investigation by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), Yadav went underground, avoiding the authorities, and was suspended in February 2018.

Departmental Inquiry and Reinstatement After Seven Years

The Maharashtra government had recommended Yadav’s dismissal in 2019. However, IPS officers, being central government employees, cannot be dismissed without the approval of the Central Government. The Centre requested the Maharashtra government to initiate a departmental inquiry, which was delayed for several years.

In mid-2025, the Central Government gave its approval for the departmental inquiry against Yadav, and a sanction to prosecute him was granted if the inquiry found him guilty. Subsequently, the state government reinstated Yadav on September 22, 2025, though his new position—Deputy Superintendent of Human Rights—has been described as a relatively insignificant post, which many see as a way to sideline him while the investigations continue.

Controversial Case and Continued Investigations

Despite his reinstatement, the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) and other investigative bodies continue to probe Yadav’s involvement in the bribery case. Legal experts have raised concerns about the significant delay in taking action against an officer accused of such serious misconduct.

According to sources, Yadav’s aide, Sunny Singh Bugai, was arrested on January 30, 2018, after being caught accepting ₹1 lakh on his behalf. As investigations progressed, Yadav disappeared without notifying authorities, which led to his suspension. He even wrote to the government, pleading his innocence and later sought bail from the Nanded court, which was rejected.

The Road Ahead: Legal and Administrative Repercussions

The reinstatement of G Vijay Krishna Yadav raises important questions about accountability in law enforcement agencies. While Yadav’s legal battle continues, many are concerned about the implications of reinstating an officer with such serious allegations hanging over him. His case reflects the challenges of balancing due process with the need for swift and transparent justice in matters of public trust.

While Yadav’s reinstatement is certainly a step towards upholding the rule of law and following due process, experts argue that the prolonged delay in handling the case could have serious repercussions for public faith in law enforcement agencies. The state and central governments are now expected to closely monitor the ongoing departmental inquiry, and the legal proceedings will likely continue to attract significant attention.

Conclusion: A Delayed Justice System

G Vijay Krishna Yadav’s reinstatement underscores the complex and often delayed nature of the Indian justice and disciplinary systems. Though he has been brought back into service after years of suspension, his career may never return to the heights it once promised, given the serious allegations against him. The continued legal proceedings will determine whether he can clear his name, or whether his career will end in disgrace.
