New Delhi: In a key administrative development, the Competent Authority has approved the induction of two Indian Police Service (IPS) officers into the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) as Superintendents of Police (SP). The appointments, approved on October 17, are on central deputation for five years or until further orders, whichever comes earlier.
Officers Appointed to CBI
The officers selected for the prestigious central posting are –
- Ashutosh Singh (IPS: 2012: Chhattisgarh cadre)
- Saurabh Gupta (IPS: 2018: Assam-Meghalaya cadre)
At present:
Ashutosh Singh is serving as Superintendent of Police, Mahasamund in Chhattisgarh
Saurabh Gupta is serving as Superintendent of Police, Hojai in Assam
These transfers mark a significant step in their professional journeys, as induction into the CBI is often viewed as a career-enhancing opportunity involving high-profile investigations and national-level responsibilities.
Deputation to CBI: A Critical Role
Posting to the CBI – India’s premier investigative agency – is considered a vital assignment for IPS officers, involving work on corruption, economic offenses, organized crime, and sensitive national cases. Officers inducted on deputation are expected to bring their field experience into specialized investigation environments, contributing to transparency, accountability, and justice delivery.
Background
The appointment of IPS officers to central investigating agencies such as the CBI is part of inter-cadre deputation policies governed by the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT). The selection typically follows approval from the Competent Authority, after evaluating officers’ service records, performance, and cadre clearances.
