New Delhi: Senior IPS officer Praveen Kumar (West Bengal cadre, 1993 batch) has been appointed as the new Director General (DG) of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP).
This appointment was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) and comes following the retirement of the previous DG, Rahul Rasgotra, who retired on September 30, 2025.
Mr Kumar is currently serving as the Special Director of the Intelligence Bureau (IB) in the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India. He has also served as Additional Director in the IB and was recently promoted to the rank of Special Director.
Mr Kumar will hold the position of DG ITBP from the date he assumes charge until his superannuation on September 30, 2030, or until further orders.
About Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP)
The ITBP is a specialized Central Armed Police Force under the Ministry of Home Affairs, formed in 1962 after the Sino-Indian War to guard India’s 3,488 km border with China. Personnel of the ITBP, also known as “Himveers” or Snow Warriors, are trained in high-altitude warfare, mountaineering, and skiing. They are stationed at extreme altitudes to monitor the border, prevent smuggling, and maintain internal security.
Besides border guarding, the ITBP leads relief and rescue operations in the Himalayas and secures sensitive installations across the country. The force operates under the motto: “Shaurya-Dridhata-Karma Nishtha” (Valour – Determination – Devotion to Duty).
