New Delhi: Senior IPS officer Praveer Ranjan has been appointed as the new Chief of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF). The announcement was made on Friday following approval by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), according to an official communication from the Department of Personnel and Training.

Appointment Details

Mr Ranjan, a 1993-batch IPS officer from the AGMUT cadre (Arunachal Pradesh, Goa, Mizoram, and Union Territories), was serving as the Special Director General of CISF prior to this promotion. He will assume the post of Director General of CISF at Pay Matrix Level 16 and will serve until his superannuation on July 31, 2029, or until further orders. He replaces Shri Rajwinder Singh Bhatti, who retired on September 30, 2025.

He has a reputation as a strong, principled, and strict administrator. He played a crucial and decisive role in significant events such as the 2020 Delhi riots and the farmers’ protest. He possesses remarkable expertise, humility, and an unwavering commitment to safeguarding the nation.

Career Highlights and Contributions

IPS Ranjan has a distinguished career marked by his commitment to police modernization and community engagement. He served as the Director General of Police (DGP) of Chandigarh for over three and a half years (August 2021 to March 2025). During his tenure, he introduced several innovative community policing initiatives, such as:

  • Samavesh
  • Swayam
  • Cyber Swachhta Mission
  • URJA – Ek Nayi Kiran
  • Student Police Cadet Programme

These programs helped enhance police-public relations and contributed to the modernization of the Chandigarh police force.

Apart from this, Mr Ranjan made significant contributions through other various initiatives. During his tenure as DGP, many services were launched, including SenCOPS, the Integrated Command and Control Center (ICCC), CCTNS, ICJS implementation, integration of ICMS, e-FIR, IRAD, ITMS, e-Beat, ERSS-112, and the digitization of over 14 police services, such as passport verification. He also emphasized modernization by introducing mPassport, Police Clearance Certificates, employee verification, and character verification.

Alongside Praveer Ranjan’s appointment, Praveen Kumar, a 1993-batch IPS officer from the West Bengal cadre, has been named Director General of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP). He will serve until his retirement on September 30, 2030, succeeding Rahul Rasgotra.
