UP Cadre IPS Sanjay Singhal, Former BSF Special DG, Takes Charge as SSB Director General | Career Highlight

New Delhi: The Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), one of India’s Central Armed Police Forces guarding the country’s borders, has appointed 1993-batch IPS officer Sanjay Singhal as its new Director General (DG). Singhal, an Uttar Pradesh cadre officer, officially took charge from outgoing DG Amrit Mohan Prasad, who handed over the ceremonial baton during a formal ceremony.

From BSF to SSB: A Veteran in Border Security

Before taking over the top post in the SSB, Sanjay Singhal served as Special Director General in the Border Security Force (BSF). His appointment to the SSB is seen as a natural progression of his deep experience in border management and internal security operations.

Proven Track Record in UP Cadre

A native of Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, Singhal has had an illustrious career in the Uttar Pradesh Police. He served as SP and SSP in key districts including Auraiya, Bahraich, Hathras, Unnao, Mainpuri, Basti, Sultanpur, Rae Bareli, Shahjahanpur, and Muzaffarnagar. Known for his effective law-and-order management, public engagement, and decisive leadership, he also held crucial roles as ADG Crime, ADG Establishment, and ADG Railway Lucknow at the UP Police Headquarters in Lucknow.

Key Roles in Central Armed Police Forces

Sanjay Singhal’s impact extends beyond state policing. He served as:

  • Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of ITBP, leading Dehradun Sector HQ
  • Inspector General (IG) of Eastern Frontier HQ, Lucknow
  • Special DG, BSF, New Delhi — overseeing both operational and administrative domains

International Recognition: UN Peacekeeping Mission in Kosovo

On the international stage, Singhal has represented India in the United Nations Peacekeeping Mission in Kosovo, where his contributions earned wide appreciation and strengthened India’s global image.
