In a significant move to promote sustainable tourism in India’s Northeast, the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) is set to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Mizoram tourism department. The agreement, expected to be finalized next week, will focus on boosting regional tourism, enhancing connectivity, and offering curated travel experiences showcasing Mizoram’s pristine landscapes and cultural richness.

Under the partnership, IRCTC will not only market Mizoram’s tourism appeal to domestic and international audiences but also provide outbound travel opportunities for residents of the state. Tour packages will include destinations such as Nepal, Bhutan, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, and several countries in Europe.
In addition to traditional tourism, IRCTC plans to roll out Christian pilgrimage tours to spiritually significant destinations including Corinth, Thessaloniki, Athens, and Patmos in Greece, and Rome in Italy. A successful pilot tour for pastors from Mizoram has already been conducted, setting the stage for future group pilgrimages.
“This partnership aligns with our goal of promoting spiritual and inclusive tourism, especially for communities in the Northeast,” Hmar said.
IRCTC, a Navratna PSU under the Ministry of Railways, was established in 1999 and provides services in ticketing, catering, and tourism. This strategic tie-up with Mizoram Tourism signals a renewed push for regional tourism development with a focus on sustainability and inclusivity.
The collaboration is expected to bring fresh momentum to travel and tourism in Mizoram, offering economic opportunities while preserving the region’s environmental and cultural heritage.
