New Delhi: In a major push for sustainable urban development, the Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency Limited (IREDA) has commissioned a 25,000 liters per day (25 KLD) Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) at the India International Centre (IIC) Annexe, New Delhi. The project has been funded under IREDA’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative and is aimed at advancing eco-friendly infrastructure within institutional premises.
Inauguration by Senior Leaders from IREDA and IIC
The newly commissioned plant was inaugurated by Dr. Bijay Kumar Mohanty, Director (Finance), IREDA, and Shri Shyam Saran, President of IIC and Former Foreign Secretary of India. Senior officials from both IREDA and IIC, including Shri K.N. Shrivastava, Director of IIC, also attended the inauguration.
The event marked a significant step toward waste-to-energy transformation, a key pillar of India’s sustainable development strategy.
What Makes the STP Unique?
The 25 KLD STP is designed to process sewage and wastewater from toilets, kitchens, and bathrooms at the IIC Annexe. Key features of the plant include–
- Energy Generation from biodegradable sludge
- Wastewater Recycling for horticulture and industrial use
- Odour Control by reducing foul discharge and improving air quality
- Contribution to Circular Economy through waste re-utilization
This modern facility will not only make IIC’s operations greener but also set a model for sustainable waste management in other institutional spaces.
IREDA’s Vision: Green Energy, Community Impact
Speaking at the event, Dr. Mohanty emphasized the role of innovative green technologies in helping India meet its climate action goals. He praised IIC for partnering in a project that merges environmental sustainability with day-to-day operations.
“Sustainable practices like this are essential for achieving India’s long-term environmental targets. IREDA is proud to support IIC in re-utilizing sewage waste to generate green energy,” said Dr. Mohanty.
CMD’s Message: “Sustainability Must Be Scalable”
In a message to mark the occasion, Mr Pradip Kumar Das, Chairman and Managing Director, IREDA, highlighted the broader vision behind the agency’s CSR interventions:
“IREDA’s CSR initiatives aim at driving change where it matters most – on the ground. This STP at IIC showcases how community welfare and green innovation can go hand-in-hand. Such projects are not just environmentally impactful, but they create scalable models for others to replicate.”
A Model for Eco-Conscious Institutions
The initiative comes at a time when urban sustainability and responsible water management are gaining prominence in India’s developmental discourse. With institutions like IIC stepping forward to adopt green technologies, IREDA’s STP project could serve as a template for other academic, cultural, and governmental bodies looking to modernize their infrastructure with eco-conscious solutions.
