Guwahati: The Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency Ltd. (IREDA) reaffirmed its strong commitment to advancing renewable energy (RE) development in India’s North-Eastern Region (NER). Speaking at an event titled “Financing Renewable Energy in the North Eastern Region” in Guwahati, Mr. Pradip Kumar Das, Chairman and Managing Director of IREDA, emphasized the North-East’s vast green energy potential and the agency’s crucial role in enabling sustainable, inclusive growth.
North-East: India’s Emerging Green Energy Frontier
Highlighting India’s rapid progress in renewable energy, Mr. Das noted that the country’s RE capacity has tripled since FY2014 and is expected to double again by FY2030. Achieving this target, he said, would require an estimated investment of ₹28 lakh crore. He underlined the North-East’s potential to play a major role in India’s clean energy transformation, driven by its abundant hydropower and solar resources.
Currently, the North-Eastern Region has achieved about 5 GW of renewable energy capacity, accounting for nearly 60% of its total installed power generation capacity. This marks significant progress toward self-sufficiency and sustainability in energy production.
IREDA’s Expanding Financial Support in the Region
To further strengthen this growth, IREDA has already sanctioned more than ₹3,500 crore in financing for renewable projects in the North-East. The agency offers concessional interest rates, including a 50 basis points rebate for RE projects located in the region and another 50 basis points rebate for women-led projects, reflecting its focus on inclusivity and gender empowerment.
Under key government initiatives such as PM-KUSUM and Rooftop Solar, IREDA has facilitated thousands of solar installations—such as 3,800 solar pumps in Tripura and multiple rooftop solar projects across Assam. Mr. Das highlighted that with enhanced grid connectivity, targeted reforms, and innovative financing models, the North-East could evolve into a major green energy hub for India and neighboring nations.
“The North-East is our green frontier. IREDA is committed to empowering the region with clean, affordable, and reliable renewable energy,” Mr. Das stated.
