New Delhi: Two officers of the Indian Revenue Service (Customs and Indirect Taxes) have been attached to different offices under the indirect tax administration. The officers are Ajay, who holds the rank of Principal Commissioner, and Sridhar Das, a Deputy Commissioner belonging to the 2016 batch of the IRS (C&IT).
According to the administrative arrangements, Ajay has been attached to the office of the Chief Commissioner (Authorised Representative) at the Customs, Excise and Service Tax Appellate Tribunal (CESTAT), Delhi, while Sridhar Das has been attached to the Bhubaneswar Goods and Services Tax (GST) and Central Excise Zone.
The attachments place the two officers in different areas of indirect tax administration, covering appellate representation and regional tax administration.
Principal Commissioner Ajay Attached to CC (AR), CESTAT Delhi
Ajay, an IRS (Customs and Indirect Taxes) officer serving at the rank of Principal Commissioner, has been attached to the office of the Chief Commissioner (Authorised Representative), CESTAT, Delhi.
The office of the Chief Commissioner (Authorised Representative) plays an important role in coordinating the revenue department’s representation in cases before the Customs, Excise and Service Tax Appellate Tribunal.
CESTAT is a specialised appellate forum dealing with disputes arising under customs, central excise and service tax laws. It hears appeals involving assessments, duty demands, penalties, classification disputes, valuation matters and other issues governed by the relevant indirect tax legislation.
Ajay’s attachment places him within the administrative framework responsible for handling and coordinating revenue-related appellate matters before the tribunal.
The assignment is significant given the specialised legal and technical nature of indirect tax litigation and the importance of effective representation of the revenue department before appellate authorities.
Deputy Commissioner Sridhar Das Attached to Bhubaneswar GST and Central Excise Zone
Sridhar Das, a 2016-batch IRS (Customs and Indirect Taxes) officer currently serving as Deputy Commissioner, has been attached to the Bhubaneswar GST and Central Excise Zone.
Originally from West Bengal, Mr Das entered the Indian Revenue Service after clearing the Civil Services Examination in 2015. He subsequently underwent professional training at the National Academy of Customs, Indirect Taxes and Narcotics (NACIN), Faridabad.
During his service, he has handled responsibilities involving field-level indirect tax administration as well as central policy coordination.
Among his earlier assignments was the position of Deputy Commissioner in the Keonjhar Division, where he gained experience in regional revenue administration.
His latest attachment to the Bhubaneswar GST and Central Excise Zone brings him back into the regional indirect tax administrative structure.
Sridhar Das Previously Served at GST Council Secretariat
Before his latest attachment, Sridhar Das served on central deputation as Under Secretary at the GST Council Secretariat in New Delhi.
The GST Council Secretariat supports the functioning of the GST Council, the constitutional body responsible for making recommendations on major aspects of India’s Goods and Services Tax framework.
The secretariat facilitates policy coordination, intergovernmental consultation and administrative support for the Council’s deliberations and decisions.
During his tenure as Under Secretary, Mr Das was associated with policy implementation and secretarial coordination relating to the indirect tax framework.
His experience at the GST Council Secretariat, combined with his earlier field assignment in Keonjhar, provides him with exposure to both the policy and operational dimensions of GST administration.
Administrative Significance of the Attachments
The two attachments involve distinct responsibilities within the Indian Revenue Service’s Customs and Indirect Taxes stream.
While Principal Commissioner Ajay has been assigned to the Chief Commissioner (Authorised Representative) office associated with appellate proceedings at CESTAT Delhi, Deputy Commissioner Sridhar Das has been attached to the Bhubaneswar GST and Central Excise Zone.
The arrangements reflect the deployment of IRS officers across legal, appellate and regional administrative functions within India’s indirect taxation system.
