Mr. Qazi Mairaj Ahmad, a 1991-batch Indian Railway Service of Engineers (IRSE) officer, has been appointed to the Higher Administrative Grade (HAG) and posted as Senior Professor at the Indian Railways Institute of Transport Management (IRITM).

Mr. Ahmad brings over three decades of experience in civil engineering and railway infrastructure. Known for his result-oriented leadership and dedication to public service, he has held several key positions, including Chief Engineer (Track Modernization) in Northern Railway and Additional Divisional Railway Manager (Operations & Infrastructure) in Lucknow.

An alumnus of IIT Roorkee (B.Tech) and IIT Delhi (M.Tech), Mr. Ahmad also holds an MBA in Operations Management from IMT Ghaziabad. He has enhanced his leadership credentials through global executive programs at Harvard, INSEAD Singapore, ICLIF Kuala Lumpur, and ISB Hyderabad. A certified Project Management Professional (PMP®) and Royal Chartered Engineer, he is also a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers (UK) and the Institution of Engineers (India).

Throughout his career, Mr. Ahmad has spearheaded numerous critical infrastructure projects, including over 468 km of gauge conversion, doubling, and new line construction, along with major yard remodelings and renewals at junctions like Varanasi and Pune. His contributions to the 2019 Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj received high praise, including commendation from the Hon’ble Prime Minister.

He is the innovator behind the “e-Setu ERP” platform for steel girder fabrication and the “Design Mode Tamping” technique for efficient track maintenance. His efforts in standardizing metro rail track designs and collaborating on Indo-Japanese high-speed rail projects further highlight his forward-looking vision.

A recipient of numerous national awards, including the General Manager’s Shield for Best Civil Engineering Project, Mr. Ahmad has also been recognized for excellence in bridge engineering. Beyond his engineering feats, he is a Certified Independent Director and an ESG expert accredited by the World Council of Directors.

In his new role as Senior Professor at IRITM, Mr. Ahmad will play a vital role in mentoring future railway leaders and contributing to knowledge dissemination in the transport sector.
