In a significant reshuffle at the top level of the West Bengal Police, senior IPS officer Jawed Shamim has been promoted to the rank of Director General of Police (DGP), marking a key administrative development in the state’s security establishment.
A 1995-batch officer, Shamim was recently serving as the Additional Director General (ADG) of the Special Task Force (STF), with additional charge of the Intelligence Branch (IB). With his elevation, he will formally take charge as DGP of both STF and IB from March 1.
An experienced and widely regarded officer, Shamim has held several crucial assignments over the years across the state police and Kolkata Police. His long tenure in sensitive and strategic roles has earned him recognition as a seasoned hand in intelligence and operational policing. The promotion is seen as a move aimed at strengthening intelligence coordination and counter-crime operations in the state.
WIDE-RANGING TRANSFERS ACROSS POLICE UNITS
Alongside Shamim’s elevation, the state government has ordered the transfer of 15 IPS officers and 37 West Bengal Police Service (WBPS) officers in a broader administrative reshuffle announced on Wednesday.
Parijat Biswas, Commandant of the SAP 11th Battalion, has been appointed as the new Superintendent of Police (SP) of Purba Medinipur. He replaces Mitun Kumar Dey, who had been functioning as acting SP while serving as Additional SP (Headquarters). Dey has now been transferred as Additional Superintendent of Police (SRP), Kharagpur, where he will hold charge of SRP Kharagpur.
In other changes, Dyutiman Bhattacharya, Commandant of SAP 3rd Battalion, has been posted as Deputy Commissioner (South) in Barrackpore Police Commissionerate. Surinder Singh, DC South of Howrah Police, will replace him, while Ganesh Biswas moves from DC South, Barrackpore to DC South, Howrah.
Additionally, Asim Khan, DC (Traffic), Howrah, has been transferred as DC (North), Barrackpore, and will be succeeded by Anupam Singh.
The reshuffle signals a strategic reorganisation aimed at strengthening field leadership across key districts and commissionerates.
