Ranchi: Under the Prime Minister Schools for Rising India (PM SHRI) scheme, government schools across India are undergoing a rapid transformation to become modern, smart, and high-quality educational models. The initiative, launched by the central government, aims to create inclusive learning environments where students from all backgrounds can thrive.
At PM SHRI Azad High School, Karbala Chowk, Ranchi, which serves a significant minority population, students and teachers report substantial improvements in both infrastructure and educational quality since the school was selected under the scheme.
Enhanced Infrastructure for Better Learning
The PM SHRI program focuses on state-of-the-art facilities, ensuring that students have access to:
- Smart classrooms equipped with digital boards
- Modern laboratories for science and technology learning
- Improved libraries with diverse learning resources
- Clean and safe school premises, including hygienic toilets
- Qualified subject teachers, including for Mathematics and Urdu
Students like Aslan Alam, a class 10 student, expressed satisfaction, saying:
“Earlier when I joined the school, it was not so equipped. Now, after it became a PM SHRI school, everything from smart classrooms to proper subject teachers is available. I am now fully prepared for my board exams.”
Other students, Khurshid Ahmed and Muhammad Javed, shared similar sentiments, stating that the school has become more engaging and supportive, encouraging better attendance, interest, and self-confidence among students.
Teacher Training and Implementation of NEP 2020
The PM SHRI scheme also emphasizes teacher training in modern technologies and teaching methods, ensuring that students receive a well-rounded education aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP 2020). The curriculum promotes:
- Creative thinking and problem-solving skills
- Digital learning and technological integration
- Self-reliance and holistic development
Sitamani, a teacher at the school since 2019, highlighted the improvements:
“After becoming a PM SHRI school, we witnessed major developments like smart classrooms, modern labs, digital boards, and better libraries. Teaching has become more effective and enjoyable.”
Central-State Partnership Driving Transformation
The school’s principal, Mohd Kurban Ali, emphasized the significance of the PM SHRI initiative:
“Before PM SHRI and after PM SHRI, the changes are remarkable. This ambitious scheme, a collaboration between the central and state governments, is bringing government schools at par with private institutions.”
The scheme currently aims to develop over 14,500 PM SHRI schools across India, managed by central, state, and local bodies, including Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs) and Navodaya Vidyalayas (NVS). Its vision is to nurture engaged, productive, and responsible citizens who contribute to an equitable, inclusive, and plural society.
Empowering Students and Communities
The PM SHRI initiative not only strengthens government schools but also provides new opportunities for underprivileged and middle-class children. By combining modern infrastructure, teacher training, and technology-driven education, the scheme is transforming the educational landscape in Ranchi and across India.
