Patna: Bihar is set for a major infrastructure transformation as the ambitious Patna–Purnea six-lane expressway project has officially entered its initial phase. The 245-kilometre access-controlled expressway, estimated at ₹27,000 crore, aims to enhance connectivity, reduce travel time, and stimulate economic growth across the state.

A Game-Changer for Connectivity

The new expressway is expected to drastically cut travel time between Patna and Purnea, benefiting commuters, traders, and logistics operators. Key features include:

  • Six-lane access-controlled road to ease congestion
  • Enhanced road safety measures for high-speed traffic
  • Multiple overbridges and underpasses for smooth local movement
  • Connectivity points linking nearby towns and districts

The central government has granted the project official expressway status, highlighting its strategic importance for Bihar’s development.

Land Acquisition and Construction Timeline

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has begun the land acquisition process along the Patna–Purnea corridor. Key updates include:

  • Statutory notifications and compensation disbursal are underway
  • Once approximately 80% of land is acquired, tendering for construction will begin
  • In Purnea district, nearly 59 km of the expressway will be developed

Officials emphasize that this phased approach will ensure smooth project execution and timely completion.

Part of Bihar’s Larger Expressway Network

The Patna–Purnea Expressway is part of a broader push to modernize Bihar’s road infrastructure, which includes:

  • Gorakhpur–Siliguri corridor development
  • Upgraded national highways connecting Bihar with Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, and West Bengal

The goal is to create a dense, high-quality expressway network across the state, supporting both local and regional transportation needs.

Economic and Regional Impact

State leaders project that the expressway will serve as a catalyst for economic growth, benefiting multiple sectors:

  • Agriculture: Faster transport to markets
  • Small businesses & industries: Reduced logistics costs
  • Tourism & regional development: Enhanced accessibility
  • Employment generation: Through construction and ancillary projects

Officials expect that by 2026, Bihar’s road network improvements will significantly contribute to emerging as a major economic hub in eastern India. With land acquisition underway and construction slated to follow soon, the Patna–Purnea Expressway represents a transformative project for Bihar. The state is poised to benefit from faster, safer, and more efficient road connectivity, linking eastern Bihar to its capital and boosting trade, tourism, and overall regional development.
