New Delhi: CJI Surya Kant has announced the formation of a committee to examine the hearing sequencing issue in the Supreme Court. The decision comes after lawyers raised concerns that last-minute changes in the daily cause list create uncertainty and make it difficult to prepare for hearings. The committee will study the issue and suggest ways to improve the listing process, making it more transparent and predictable.

What are the Reasons of Supreme Court Hearing Sequence Review Committee

During a hearing, Senior Advocate Gaurav Bhatia informed the Bench that many lawyers were facing problems because the sequence of cases in the daily cause list often changed at the last minute.

According to him, these unexpected changes create confusion and affect lawyers’ ability to represent their clients effectively. He also said there was broad agreement among members of the Bar that the current system needed improvement.

Supreme Court Hearing Sequence Review Committee: What Did CJI Surya Kant Say

Chief Justice of India Surya Kant said the matter had already been discussed in a Full Court meeting of Supreme Court judges. He informed the court that a committee has already been constituted to examine the issue. The committee will study the concerns raised by lawyers and submit recommendations. The Supreme Court will then consider the suggestions before deciding on any changes.

Why Is Hearing Sequencing Important

Every working day, the Supreme Court publishes a cause list that shows the order in which cases are expected to be heard. However, judges sometimes change the sequence based on urgent matters, admissions, or other judicial priorities. While this helps the court manage urgent cases, frequent last-minute changes can make it difficult for lawyers and litigants to plan their appearances.

Supreme Court Hearing Sequence Review Committee: What Could Change

The newly formed committee is expected to review the current system and recommend measures to reduce uncertainty in case listings. If the recommendations are accepted, the Supreme Court may introduce a more predictable and transparent hearing sequence while still allowing flexibility for urgent matters.

What are the Impact of Supreme Court Hearing Sequence Review Committee on Lawyers and Litigants

A more stable hearing schedule could help:

  • Lawyers prepare arguments more efficiently.
  • Litigants avoid unnecessary waiting.
  • Improve overall court management.
  • Increase transparency in the judicial listing process.

The committee’s report is expected to guide future reforms in the Supreme Court’s case-listing system.
