Dr. Alok Mohan, a 1987-batch IPS officer of the Karnataka cadre and the incumbent Director General and Head of the Police Force in Karnataka, is scheduled to retire on May 21, 2025. He had assumed charge exactly two years earlier on May 21, 2023, succeeding Mr. Praveen Sood (1986-batch IPS officer), who was appointed as the Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

With Dr. Mohan’s retirement imminent, the Government of Karnataka is expected to make a temporary or ad hoc arrangement for the top post of State DGP. This stop-gap setup is anticipated due to the time required by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) to finalize and recommend a panel of suitable officers for the appointment.
As per reports, the state government has already submitted a panel of senior officers to the UPSC for consideration. The panel includes:
- Mr. Prashant Kumar Thakur (1992-batch IPS officer), currently serving as Director General, Fire and Emergency Services.
- Mr. M Abdullah Saleem (1993-batch IPS officer), serving as Director General, Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
- Mr. K Ramachandra Rao (1993-batch IPS officer), serving as CMD, Karnataka State Police Housing and Infrastructure Development Corporation.
- Mr. Pronab Mohanty (1994-batch IPS officer), currently heading the Internal Security Division (ISD) and Cyber Command as Director General.
All officers shortlisted are considered eligible, with each having a service tenure of two to three years, ensuring continuity and leadership stability in the state’s police force.
The final decision will hinge on the recommendations made by the UPSC, which is currently evaluating the profiles.
