Thiruvananthapuram: In a deeply saddening development, Additional Director General of Police (Crimes), Kerala, Mahipal Yadav (IPS:1997:KL), passed away on Wednesday in Rajasthan, just hours before his official retirement ceremony was to be held at the Kerala Police Headquarters in Thiruvananthapuram.
Mr Yadav, 52, had been undergoing treatment for a brain tumour since late July, and had been on medical leave after completing his tenure as Excise Commissioner. His sudden passing has left the police fraternity and administrative circles in shock, especially as preparations were underway for his ceremonial send-off marking his retirement on August 30.
Distinguished Career Across State and Centre
A 1997-batch IPS officer of Kerala cadre and a native of Alwar, Rajasthan, Mr Yadav served in various key roles during his illustrious career. These included–
- ADGP (Crimes), Kerala
- Excise Commissioner, Kerala
- Inspector General (IG), Ernakulam Range
- Managing Director, Kerala State Beverages Corporation
- Senior role with the Border Security Force (BSF) on central deputation
- Tenure in the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), where he handled high-profile corruption and defence-related cases
During his CBI tenure, Yadav was part of investigations into significant cases like the AgustaWestland VVIP chopper scam and the disproportionate assets case involving SP leader Mulayam Singh Yadav.
Recognised for Excellence and Integrity
In 2013, Mr Yadav was awarded the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service, acknowledging his dedication and professionalism across both central and state roles.
Most recently, he was appointed as ADGP (Crimes) in July 2025, but was unable to serve long in that position due to his declining health. Following his medical leave, M R Ajith Kumar was appointed as the new Excise Commissioner.
