Mr. M R Ajith Kumar, a 1995-batch Kerala cadre IPS officer, currently serving as ADGP, is set to be promoted to Director General of Police (DGP) despite facing a vigilance inquiry over disproportionate asset allegations. He is also under investigation for holding a meeting with RSS leaders.
The IPS Screening Committee, comprising the Chief Secretary, the DGP, the Home Secretary, and the Vigilance Director, has approved his promotion. Kumar is expected to assume the role of DGP in July 2025 when a vacancy arises. Officer Kumar earlier served as the ADGP in the Law & Order department.
Kerala Chief Secretary Sarada Muraleedharan, a 1990-batch IAS officer, clarified that a vigilance inquiry alone cannot block an official’s promotion. As per rules, promotions can only be withheld if the official is awaiting trial after a chargesheet, is under suspension, or has been issued a disciplinary memo.
