New Delhi: The Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC) has successfully removed most of the rig equipment from the site of Well RDS#147A, marking a critical advancement in the ongoing well control efforts. Working closely with international well control specialists from Cudd Pressure Control, ONGC’s Crisis Management Team (CMT) has paved the way for the imminent well capping operation by mobilizing essential heavy equipment to the site.

Major Equipment Removal Paves Way for Capping

Approximately ten trailer loads of rig material have been cleared from the site by the ONGC team and their expert collaborators, significantly reducing onsite hazards and facilitating safer subsequent procedures. Concurrently, detailed inspections of the rig mast’s elevated sections have been completed to plan the safe extraction of tubing housed within the derrick. To assist with this delicate task, a specialised extra-long boom crane is being mobilised and is expected to arrive shortly.

Air Quality Remains Safe; Residents Advised to Return

Continuous air quality monitoring around the affected area has revealed no detectable hydrocarbons beyond a 30-metre radius from the well. In light of these positive environmental readings, authorities have cleared residents living beyond 500 metres of the site to safely return to their homes. Normal activities, including cooking and electricity usage, have been deemed safe for resumption.

Progress in Gas Pressure Reduction Enhances Safety

A further decline in gas pressure from the well has been recorded, which will aid the upcoming capping operation by providing a more controlled and secure environment. To maintain safety, ONGC is continuing round-the-clock water blanketing of the well to minimize risks during the procedure.

Ongoing Support to Affected Communities

Beyond technical operations, ONGC has maintained strong support for the affected population, working hand-in-hand with the District Administration at local relief camps. Medical assistance is being provided 24/7 to those in need, underscoring ONGC’s commitment to the health and welfare of the community impacted by the incident.

About ONGC

ONGC is India’s largest government-owned oil and gas exploration and production company. Established on August 14, 1956, ONGC is a Maharatna Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas. Headquartered in New Delhi, ONGC is pivotal to India’s energy security and economic growth.
