New Delhi: The Government of India has approved the Ministry of Power’s proposal to reappoint Gurdeep Singh as the Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of NTPC Limited on a contractual basis for one year, starting from August 1, 2025, the date of his superannuation. He will continue in the role until a regular appointment is made or further orders are issued—whichever is earlier.
The terms and conditions of his re-employment will be finalized by the Ministry of Power in consultation with the Department of Public Enterprises (DPE), the government announced through an official order.
Leadership Continuity at India’s Largest Power Utility
Gurdeep Singh, who has led NTPC since February 2016, is widely credited with steering the PSU through a major phase of transformation. His reappointment comes amid an ongoing leadership selection impasse after the Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB) failed to identify a suitable successor from a pool of candidates earlier this year. The PESB had recommended that the Ministry set up a Search-cum-Selection Committee to take over the process.

Strategic Leadership in Energy Transition
Under Singh’s stewardship, NTPC has:
- Diversified beyond coal into renewables, green hydrogen, bioenergy, and nuclear power
- Initiated global expansion and decarbonization strategies
- Set aggressive targets including 60 GW renewable capacity by 2032 and net-zero by 2070
- Earned global recognition—Singh was named Platts Global Energy CEO of the Year (2022)
Industry experts view his extension as a move to ensure stability and strategic continuity, particularly as NTPC spearheads India’s clean energy transition and works toward meeting the government’s ambitious climate commitments.
Broader PSU Leadership Challenges
Singh’s reappointment also reflects a broader trend across public sector undertakings, where top-level vacancies at entities like ONGC, HPCL, and BPCL have been delayed due to PESB’s inability to recommend successors. This has led to ministries increasingly opting for contractual extensions to maintain leadership continuity in critical infrastructure sectors.
What’s Next
- A Search Committee is expected to begin the process for finding Singh’s successor in the coming months
- Singh’s leadership will remain critical in managing NTPC’s project pipeline, including upcoming green hydrogen hubs, battery storage, and international ventures
