Madhya Pradesh has won the Silver Award in the State and Union Territory category for its outstanding implementation of the One District-One Product (ODOP) initiative. The award was presented by Union Commerce and Industry Minister Mr. Piyush Goyal at a grand ceremony held at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi.
The recognition comes under the leadership of Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav, whose administration has been instrumental in promoting Madhya Pradesh’s traditional and indigenous products on global platforms.
From Local to Global: Expanding Export Frontiers
The ODOP scheme has provided a major boost to artisans, farmers, and entrepreneurs by connecting their unique products with global markets. Through aggressive promotion and support for local producers, Madhya Pradesh is steadily transitioning “from local to global.”
Many of these products have earned Geographical Indication (GI) tags, adding value and increasing international demand for items such as handlooms, handicrafts, food items, and indigenous agricultural produce.
GI-Tagged Products Strengthen MP’s ODOP Portfolio
Madhya Pradesh currently has 19 GI-tagged products, of which 7 are part of the ODOP initiative. Key items include:
- Chanderi Saree
- Bagh Print
- Nagpur Orange
- Ratlami Sev
- Kadaknath Chicken
- Chinnor Rice
- Maheshwari Saree
- Mahoba Deshwari Paan
- Morena Gajak
These products are not only culturally significant but are also gaining international acclaim due to their quality and heritage value.
Noteworthy ODOP Success Stories
The state has made remarkable progress in several districts under the ODOP framework:
- Burhanpur – High-quality bananas
- Raisen – Aromatic Basmati rice
- Balaghat – Premium Chinnor rice
ODOP promotional walls have been established in Singapore, New York, Vancouver, Milan, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Japan, further enhancing the visibility of MP’s local products.
Moreover, ODOP products from Madhya Pradesh are now available at prominent retail hubs like Mustafa Centre and Centre Point Mall in Singapore.
Strategic Government Support for Global Reach
To strengthen the ODOP initiative, the Madhya Pradesh government has implemented multiple measures:
- Skill development and training for local artisans and producers
- Branding, packaging, and design support
- Digitalisation of product catalogues and marketing
- Export promotion through trade fairs and e-commerce
- Logistics and market access support for international trade
These steps are designed to empower small producers and improve the global competitiveness of Madhya Pradesh’s indigenous products.
A Model for Atmanirbhar Bharat
Madhya Pradesh is fast emerging as a cultural, industrial, and export hub, driven by the ODOP scheme. The initiative has become a mass movement, engaging:
- Women’s self-help groups
- Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs)
- Local entrepreneurs and startups
The award was received by Ms. Ruhi Khan (2013-batch Madhya Pradesh cadre IAS officer), Deputy Secretary, Department of Industry, Commerce & Investment Promotion, on behalf of the state government. The event also saw the presence of Delhi’s Chief Minister Ms. Rekha Gupta, Union ministers, and senior officials from across India.
Way Ahead
This national recognition reaffirms Madhya Pradesh’s commitment to the vision of “From Local Hands to Global Markets”, contributing significantly to Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India). With continued support and innovation, the ODOP scheme is set to become a cornerstone of India’s grassroots economic empowerment strategy.
